![]() FEATURED WINE - Some Young Punks![]() Some Young Punks (first vintage 2005) is owned by three winemaker friends - Colin McBryde, Jennie Gardner and Nic Bourke. It is based in the Clare Valley, where Col & Jennie own the Adelina winery and vineyard, and in McLaren Vale where Nic is a winemaker at a larger facility. They decided one sunny afternoon over a couple of beers to create a wine label that would grab people's attention. Says McBryde: 'The formula was very simple: make rocking wine, with equally rocking packaging'. The three have been mates for a long time, and all have been entrenched in the wine industry for the past 10-14 years. The style of wine they intend to make from each parcel of fruit dictates which facility the fruit goes to. The style in the Clare is much more rustic - extended maceration (up to 60 days), indigenous yeast fermentation, gross lees aging etc; Nic approaches the parcels of fruit with more of a new world contemporary style. Once vinified, all of the parcels are kept separate until blending, at which point they create each individual blend on the merit of each component by function of vintage/vineyard etc. Each year the blends remain the same, however the percentages and regions where they draw the fruit from may vary. The Pulp Series is inspired by Nic Bourke's pulp fiction novel collection, and the T'n'T Series is inspired by the fictional twins Trixie & Tessa Love. McBryde says the concept of the labels is very tongue in cheek. 'The pulp fiction novels were considered trite & crass for their time. We wanted that juxtaposition'. Despite the considered unconventionality, they are deadly serious about making booze, it really is a passion bigger than the three of them. They are hand-crafted wines that punch well above their weight. 'If the wine doesn't make the grade, we won't use it. We like making interesting blends from fruit we can afford. It's a smaller production, making the best wines we possibly can'. The T'n'T Series:'Twin heroines Trixie & Tessa Love occupy a comic book reality infested with Squids, Monsters, Ninjas, and cracked plans for world domination. Beset on all sides by this constant mayhem these wines are their stories. Ably illustrated by Asaf Hanuka the wines are radical-lush inside & out'. 2009 Monsters, Monsters Attack! Clare Riesling, off dry in style, this vintage carries about 27 grams residual sugar. 2008 The Squid's Fist 60% Sangiovese from the Barossa, 40% Shiraz from Clare 2008 Double Love Trouble October Tempranillo/Cabernet The Pulp Series:'Inspired by images as bright & intense as our wines, we hand selected original cover works from 'low brow' literature of the 20's through 50's as well as having our own maidens penned. Exotic sirens dresigned to draw attention seemed the best way to clothe our wines and avoid becoming wallflowers' 2008 Passion has Red Lips Cabernet from McLaren Vale, 46% Shiraz from Padthaway 2007 Drink'n'Stick 59% Mataro from Padthaway, 41% Shiraz from McLaren Vale 2007 Quickie 85% Nebbiolo from the Barossa & 15% Shiraz from the Clare ![]()
