Elderton Command Shiraz 2022

Of the 2022 vintage, winemaker Jules Ashmead commented, “Using our tulip closed fermenters we were able take a portion of the fruit and hold for extended time on skins helping to deliver a parcel with exceptional length and depth with that long gentle extraction time on skins. In addition to this, we fermented parcels separately in open cement vats for 7-14 days. These parcels were pressed straight to oak, before eventual barrel selection to decide the final Command blend. That is a big tasting complete with a plenty of robust discussion!

I’ve been looking forward to this wine, ever since I tasted the previous vintage – both are superb Barossa years... An opaque maroon, this is fresh and energetic, with good focus. There is quality oak, well into integration. The nose exhibits notes of chocolate, blackberries, florals, coffee beans, mocha, aniseed and plums. Ideally balanced with great length, the wine finishes with the silkiest of tannins. Perhaps more classically structured than the 21, which offered more plushness, but there is such promise here. A cracker. Twenty to twenty-five years of pleasure ahead. In the pantheon of great Barossa Shiraz, this is sensational value.
