Castello di Cigognola
Castello di Cigognola is an estate in Cigognola (Pavia province, Oltrepo Pavese, Lombardia) producing Pinot Nero from the hills south of the Po river the Oltrepo Pavese being Lombardia's most important red wine zone, also one of Italy's oldest sources of Pinot Nero for méthode classique sparkling. The estate is operated by the Moratti family and produces both still Pinot Nero and Oltrepo Pavese Metodo Classico sparkling from its hilltop castle estate.
Oltrepo Pavese occupies an unusual position in Italian wine: geographically adjacent to the Po Valley, climatically Apennine-influenced, with a long Pinot Nero tradition that predates most of Italy's other Pinot Nero plantings. For programmes building an Italian wine section beyond the standard Piedmont/Tuscany/Veneto territories, Castello di Cigognola provides the Lombardia/Oltrepo Pavese reference: Pinot Nero in both still and sparkling formats from a historic hilltop estate.
