Depaz
Martinique · Est. 1917
Depaz is a Martinique rhum agricole distillery operating from the Domaine de la Martinique estate at Saint-Pierre, at the base of Mont Pelée on the northern tip of Martinique the same volcanic region as Rhum J.M. to the east. The original plantation was founded in 1651; the estate was destroyed in the catastrophic 1902 eruption of Mont Pelée and rebuilt by Victor Depaz, one of only a handful of survivors, who returned to restore the distillery in 1917. The rebuilt estate operates within the Martinique AOC framework.
The Depaz range covers blanc, single-cask Canne Bleue, VSOP, XO, and vintage millésimé expressions. As a northern Martinique producer at the foot of an active volcano, Depaz has one of the most dramatically situated estates in the French Caribbean. For programmes building a Martinique agricole range with terroir differentiation the volcanic north (Depaz, J.M.) versus the coastal lowland centres Depaz provides the complementary volcanic-origin narrative alongside J.M.'s Macouba terroir story.
