Domaine Schoffit

Alsace

Domaine Schoffit is an Alsace producer based in Colmar (Haut-Rhin), known principally for wines from the Rangen de Thann Grand Cru the most southerly Grand Cru in Alsace, located on the steep volcanic basalt slopes above Thann, and historically one of the most prized sites in the appellation. Rangen is unique in Alsace: volcanic soils (blue schist and basalt) rather than the granite or limestone of most Alsace sites, producing wines of extreme mineral intensity and concentration. Schoffit also produces Chasselas Vieilles Vignes old-vine expressions of Alsace's most underrated white variety.

The Rangen Grand Cru expressions Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris are among the most distinctive and long-lived wines in Alsace: the volcanic soil character produces a smokiness and mineral depth quite different from granite-sourced Grand Cru wines. For programmes building a serious Alsace selection, Domaine Schoffit provides the Rangen volcanic terroir as an important counterpoint to the more prominent limestone and granite Grand Cru sites. The Chasselas, though a minor variety globally, demonstrates Alsace's capacity to produce compelling wines from grape varieties rarely encountered in serious form elsewhere in France.
