Familia Chavarri
Familia Chavarri is the family behind Bodega Larchago in Rioja Alavesa the sub-appellation of Rioja governed by the Basque country (Álava province), producing Tempranillo from clay-limestone vineyards on the elevated plateau above the Ebro river. The Chavarri family farms organically, producing both the Larchago estate label and the Familia Chavarri branded expressions from their own vineyards in the Alavesa.
Rioja Alavesa produces Tempranillo with a different character from Rioja Alta and Rioja Oriental: the limestone plateau soils and higher altitude produce more aromatic, lighter-bodied wines with greater fresh-fruit character and acid structure than the lower-elevation clay-iron soils of the Alta zone. For programmes wanting to demonstrate the sub-regional diversity within Rioja, the Chavarri/Larchago range provides the Alavesa terroir perspective within a family-estate production context.
