Rivière du Mât

Réunion · Est. 1859

Rivière du Mât is a rum producer from Réunion Island a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean, approximately 700km east of Madagascar. Réunion's rum industry is rooted in the island's historic sugar cane economy; the distillery is named after the Rivière du Mât, the main river valley in the interior of the island. Réunion rum is produced from both fresh cane juice (in the agricole tradition) and cane molasses, under different production conditions from the Atlantic French Caribbean estates.

As the only Réunion producer in the Bouchon rum range, Rivière du Mât provides a genuinely distinct geographic and climatic origin Indian Ocean rather than Atlantic Caribbean, tropical island production at a different latitude and humidity from Martinique or Marie-Galante. For programmes building a geographic rum narrative (French Caribbean, English Caribbean, South American, Indian Ocean), Réunion represents the most geographically remote French rum territory in the catalogue.
