Säntis Malt
Appenzell · Est. 1886
Säntis Malt is a Swiss Alpine single malt whisky produced by Brauerei Locher in Appenzell (northeastern Switzerland), at the foot of the Säntis mountain in the Appenzell Alps. The distillery's distinctive approach uses beer barrels from Brauerei Locher's own brewery for cask maturation: the whisky is aged in ex-Appenzeller beer casks, ex-Bierbrand casks, and a range of wine and fortified wine casks including Sherry, Port, and Bordeaux. The high-altitude Alpine environment and the beer-cask provenance create a whisky profile unlike any other Swiss or European production.
Säntis Malt represents one of Europe's most distinctive craft whisky propositions: Swiss mountain air, brewery-adjacent maturation, and a cask programme driven by the unique flavour contribution of Swiss beer barrels. The Alpstein XIX expression (Sherry cask finish) and the Himmelberg Malt demonstrate the range of character achievable from the same Swiss single malt spirit through varied cask maturation. For programmes building an international whisky section that extends beyond Scottish, Irish, Japanese, and American production, Säntis provides the most distinctive European craft single malt in the Bouchon range.
