St Raphael

France · Est. 1830

St Raphael is a French quinquina aperitif a wine-based bitter drink flavoured with cinchona bark (quinine) and other botanicals, produced since 1830. Quinquina is the historical pre-vermouth class of French aperitif: wine-based, bitter, and intended to be taken before meals as both a digestive stimulant and (in the 19th century) as a prophylactic against malaria. The category includes Lillet, Byrrh, Dubonnet, and St Raphael as the main surviving commercial expressions.

St Raphael Amber (Rouge) and Dry are the two principal expressions the Amber is the classic, with a characteristic bittersweet quinine note and the rich amber colour of the oxidised wine base. For on-premise programmes building a historical French aperitif section, or wanting a classic spritz base outside the mainstream Aperol/Campari category, St Raphael provides the quinquina position. Classic service: poured over ice, topped with tonic or soda, optional citrus garnish.
