La Maison du Whisky was founded in Paris on 14 September 1956 by Georges Benitah, as an importer and distributor at a time when single malt was barely sold outside Scotland. The first shop opened in Paris in 1968. It is run today by his son Thierry Benitah, and is one of Europe's principal specialists in rare whisky and rum — retailer, importer, agent and wholesaler at once.

Alongside the houses it represents, LMDW selects and bottles its own casks, and it is for these that it is collected: the Artist Collective series of single malts, and a long run of collector bottlings drawn from closed and sought-after distilleries. Because these are independent bottlings, the liquid comes from the named distillery while the selection, the cask and the strength are LMDW's.
