Carlo Pellegrino
Carlo Pellegrino is a Marsala wine house founded in 1880 in Mazara del Vallo, western Sicily one of the historic producers at the original centre of the Marsala DOC appellation. Pellegrino produces Marsala across the full range of styles: Fine, Superiore, Superiore Riserva, and the premium Vergine (dry, unfortified, aged minimum five years). The estate also produces Passito di Pantelleria from sun-dried Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) grown on Pantelleria island.
Marsala Vergine the dry, long-aged expression without added concentrated must is the category's quality benchmark: complex, oxidative, nutty, comparable to aged Amontillado or Oloroso Sherry in character. For programmes wanting to extend a fortified wine or digestif section into the Italian Marsala tier, Carlo Pellegrino Vergine provides the most direct representation of what serious Marsala can be, alongside Passito di Pantelleria as the sweet, sun-dried counterpart.
